You are a student in Portugal (with a cartão de residência type “estudante do ensino superior”) and would like to go to Germany as part of an exchange program (e.g. Erasmus)? Then you do not need to apply for a visa if you fulfill all of the 3 requirements below:

1. You are not going to stay in Germany for more than 1 year,
2. your cartão de residência type “estudante do ensino superior” is valid during the whole stay in Germany and
3. Your German university registers you with the German BAMF.

You can find more information here on the website of the BAMF. Please contact your German university to ask them to register you for the period of your stay in Germany.

Important! According to §19f sec. 1 AufenthG (German Residence Act; https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_aufenthg/englisch_aufenthg.html#p0613 ), holders of a Portuguese residence title for temporary protection (proteção temporária) cannot receive a visa for university studies (§16b AufenthG). If you have a Portuguese residence title based on the temporary protection regime, you first need to change your Portuguese residence title in order to be able to receive a visa for the purpose of university studies.
